About Javi Zavala
My interest in photography began in the 90's during my University years in Baja California Mexico, where I took a couple of classes on film photography. After graduating as an Oceanographer I have had the opportunity to visit many fascinating places and my camera has been the best companion and tool to record what I have seen and what I have felt during those trips. It was during these university years that I learned the basics of photography. In 1997 my scientific curiosity brought me to live in Boulder (Colorado, USA) where I felt in love with the mountains and was able to buy my first digital camera. And again, my camera was the best witness of what I was seeing and feeling. It was then that I developed my skills on landscape and nature photography, skills that I augmented during my years living in Miami where I took nature photography classes in the Everglades National Park. More recently, after moving to the NY city area, my love for the visual arts has truly matured while my curiosity has brought me to explore other fields of photography and "JaviZ Photography" was born (JaviZPhotography.com). Here I document my most recent visual explorations such as portrait, fashion, night-club, black&white, and travel photography. One of the main lines of my current work falls in what I call "SalsArt" where I try to document an artistic expression of my passion for latin rhythms and dancing. During the last year I have been collaborating with fashion designer Elena V where I have had the opportunity to photograph world-famous salsa dancers. My long term goal in SalsArt is to contribute to highlight photography as a mean of artistic expression rather than a way of just documenting an event. In my own work, I like to incorporate dramatic lighting combined with bold colors, perspective and lines to provoke emotion. I want people to learn or recreate those feelings that blossom so frequently but are so ephemeral during that celebration of life that we call "a latin night".
